At Rapptr Labs, delivering exceptional, innovative digital products is at the heart of everything we do. But what goes into ensuring the quality of these products before they reach our clients? In this blog, Kingsley Okoli, our SDET (Software Developer Engineer in Test), takes you behind the scenes of our Quality Assurance (QA) department, where rigorous testing and collaboration with development teams are key to our process. From exploratory and regression testing to tackling the unique challenges presented by emerging technologies like AI, our QA team ensures that every product is fine-tuned for success. In this Q&A, we’ll dive into how our QA department aligns with Rapptr Labs' mission of providing top-notch digital solutions. Read on to discover how we maintain the balance between manual and automated testing, handle multiple client projects, and leverage cutting-edge tools to deliver the best results.
Q: How does the QA department ensure the testing process aligns with the companyʼs overall mission of delivering top-notch, innovative digital products to clients?
A: At Rapptr Labs we have a very stringent process. We do exploratory testing for new features, followed by regression testing to ensure all business functionalities are intact. We also conduct performance testing for apps and web to ensure there are no slow loading times. If needed, we perform API-level testing. We are fully equipped to handle mobile app testing as well. This comprehensive approach ensures that every release is thoroughly tested before going public, helping us deliver customized QA solutions tailored to each client’s product vision.
Q: Emerging technologies like AI and machine learning present unique challenges for QA. How do you approach testing these cutting-edge technologies, and what specific hurdles have you faced?
A: We started an AI feature for a sales company where agents are given sales pitch recommendations based on AI prompts, lead data, and industry info. Since there’s limited framework for testing AI, we rely heavily on manual methods, using black-box testing to focus on input vs output rather than internal logic. Understanding AI behavior is key. We spend time analyzing results deeply to refine our testing approach. Rapptr Labs is committed to evolving alongside technology while maintaining high-quality standards.
Q: With multiple client projects happening at the same time, how does the QA department manage and prioritize testing efforts to ensure smooth delivery?
A: Prioritization starts with understanding the business impact and release timelines for each project. We collaborate closely with project managers and development leads to identify high-risk areas, upcoming deadlines, and client expectations. From there, we assign QA resources accordingly, often using a blend of parallel testing, staggered cycles, and automation for routine validations. Our flexible team structure allows us to pivot quickly while still ensuring each project gets the QA coverage it needs.
Q: Automation is a growing focus in the QA world. How does Rapptr Labs balance automated and manual testing to achieve both speed and accuracy?
A: We use automation strategically, primarily for regression suites, smoke tests, and repetitive test flows which frees up time for manual testers to focus on new features and exploratory testing. Manual testing still plays a crucial role, especially in areas that require human intuition, like UI/UX validation or edge-case behavior. By balancing both approaches, we can cover more ground efficiently without compromising test depth or product quality.
Q: QA requires close collaboration with developers and product teams. How does the QA department incorporate feedback from these teams to improve product quality during testing?
A: Communication is key. We’re involved early during sprint planning and refinement sessions, which helps us align test plans with evolving product goals. We also keep open channels through daily stand-ups and async tools like Slack or Jira. When devs or product managers flag potential issues or edge cases, we adjust our test coverage to include those scenarios. It’s a continuous feedback loop that helps reduce bugs before they reach production.
Q: What are some of the key tools or technologies the QA team uses to ensure successful testing?
A: Our toolbox includes automation frameworks like Playwright and Appium for web and mobile testing, Postman for API validations, and project management tools like Jira and TestRail to organize and track our testing. We also use BrowserStack for cross-platform testing and tools like GraphQL when inspecting network traffic. The mix of tools allows us to test thoroughly across various platforms, ensuring consistent performance and reliability.
